Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome, one of the most common and underdiagnosed ocular problems in the United States, results from chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture in the eye. In some cases, the eye does not produce enough tears, or in other cases, the chemical composition of the tears does a poor job of lubricating the eyes.

Symptoms of dry eye syndrome vary from patient to patient and may be one or a combination of the following: burning, stinging, itching, a gritty sensation, light and wind sensitivity, blurred vision, sticky discharge, and eye redness. Watery eyes are sometimes a symptom of dry eye syndrome, because the excessive dryness works to overstimulate the watery component of the eye's tears. According to a recent study, one out of five Americans may suffer from dry eye syndrome. Women, individuals who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes, contact lens wearers, and computer users are all more likely to develop dry eye.

If you have dry eye syndrome, Dr. Collins may prescribe artificial tears, which are lubricating eye drops that may alleviate the discomfort. Other prescription drops may help decrease inflammation and help patients produce more and better tears. Some nutritional supplements containing certain essential fatty acids, or other prescription medications, can also decrease symptoms of dry eye. One of the best treatments for dry eye involves placing collagen, silicone, or acrylic plugs in the tear ducts to keep tears from draining away too quickly. Punctal plugs can be easily and painlessly inserted while you are in Dr. Collins’ office. Nearly all medical insurance companies cover this procedure.

Some patients with a tendency towards dry eyes before surgery may experience an increase in symptoms after eye surgery such as LASIK. Dr. Collins will test your eyes prior to surgery and recommend treatment.
